The CPS Port Captain Program

Port Captain

What Is a "Port Captain"?

Port Captains are CPS members who stand ready to assist boaters in their area.

Port Captains provide reliable information on the area, and comradeship to visitors. Port Captains keep information on hand that a visiting skipper may request over the telephone, such as:

Navigation hazards which may not be apparent on current charts

Location and telephone numbers of local doctors and  dentists who are willing to treat a transient patient.

Location and telephone numbers of ambulances or rescue squads.

Location and telephone numbers of mechanics, repair yards, sail repair, marine fittings and marine equipment stores.

The closest source of provisions, recommended restaurants and motels

IMPORTANT NOTE:
Recipients of  information from Port Captains should realize that the information is given in good faith and to the best of their knowledge, and that the Port Captain, and Kingston Power and Sail Squadron, can not be held responsible for any loss or damage that may be sustained as a result of the advice offered.

 Our Cruising Area's

The 1000 Islands

Map of the Thousand Islands Region

The Thousand Islands lies in the St. Lawrence River, running along the Canadian side of the border from Kingston to Brockville, Ontario, a distance of less than 80 km (50m).  The Canada/U.S. border runs down the middle of the islands and is clearly shown on all charts. This is one of the best cruising areas anywhere in the world. It has many anchorages, beaches, sport-fishing, tour boats, small towns, campgrounds, and a Canadian federal park as well as US State parks.

The 1000 IslandsThe actual number of islands in this area is closer to two thousand, with the official count standing at 1,793.  The "Forty Acres" is a favorite of sailors because it is close to the many park islands south-west of Gananoque.

If you plan to visit the 1000 Islands by boat, be sure to visit Pat's Boating in Canada.  It is one of the oldest and best boating information sites in Canada!

The Rideau Waterway

Location MapThe Rideau Waterway is located in the heart of eastern Ontario, Canada.  The corridor follows the historic Rideau Canal Waterway which connects Kingston in the south to Ottawa in the north.  It is a boater's paradise, attracting pleasure boats from across North America to travel its 202 kilometre (125 mile) length. The Rideau Canal is a Canadian National Historic Site and a nominated World Heritage Site.

If you are going to visit the Rideau Waterway, be sure to visit Ken Watson's Rideau Canal Waterway site   The site itself is a boater's paradise and visitor's delight.
